Making gifts, to put it very simply, is the act of giving. We spend a lot of time and money thinking about what to give but, what if the best gift is the one that does not cost us anything? What if the best gift is the one that we do not give? This article is a guide on how to give a gift and, if it recommends that you don't give anything, it is surely one of the best you will read on the subject.

REGALAR
Regalar, simplificando mucho, es el acto de dar. Invertimos mucho tiempo y dinero pensando en que regalar pero, ¿y si el mejor regalo es aquel que no nos cuesta nada? ¿Y si el mejor regalo es aquel que no damos? Este artículo es una guía de como hacer un regalo y, si te recomienda que no regales nada, es que seguramente es una de las mejores que leerás al respecto.
When we give a gift we really invest in that relationship. We tell that person: "Hey, I appreciate you, I like you, I like having you around" or even "I want something from you" (to make a business deal, to receive your affection, to remain friends...).
Cuando regalamos algo realmente invertimos en esa relación. le decimos a esa persona: “Hei, te aprecio, me gustas, me gusta tenerte cerca” o incluso “ quiero algo de ti” (hacer un negocio, recibir tu afecto, seguir siendo amigos…)
The gift does not imply a specific monetary value, it is the action of giving, although in our mind we always put a value according to the event or relationship: for a direct relative we will reimburse a large amount, for a compromise gift we only put what is considered necessary according to the event. This is a big red line to avoid, the monetary value of a gift.
El regalo no implica un valor monetario en concreto, es la acción de dar, aunque en nuestra mente ponemos siempre un valor según el acontecimiento o la relación: por un familiar directo reembolsaremos una gran cantidad, por un regalo de compromiso pondremos solo lo que se considere necesario según el evento. Esta es una gran línea roja para evitar, el valor monetario de un regalo.
A gift is affection in object form, it is love in the real world. It can be physical or non-physical. It can be spending time, it can be a letter, it can be anything that demonstrates this affection. The time required to do it can be whatever you consider, 5 minutes or months of preparation, it doesn't matter. If you are going towards the right gift you are not going to measure the time, you are going to give it the time it needs, just like in love, they work the same way.
Un regalo es cariño en forma de objeto, es amor en el mundo real. Puede ser físico o no. Puede ser pasar tiempo, puede ser una carta, puede ser cualquier cosa que demuestre este afecto. El tiempo requerido para hacerlo puede ser lo que consideres, 5 minutos o meses de preparación, no importa. Si vas hacia el regalo correcto no vas a medir el tiempo, vas a darle el tiempo que necesita, igual que en el amor, funcionan de la misma forma.
Sometimes the best gift is to give the money from the budget, or ask directly to the gifted person what he/she/them would like, or a dinner, a trip, an experience. Avoiding compromise gifts and gift giving for the sake of gift giving is the key to getting it right.
A veces el mejor regalo es dar el dinero del presupuesto, o preguntar directamente a la persona regalada que le gustaría, o una cena, un viaje, una experiencia. Evitar los regalos por compromiso y el regalar por regalar es la clave para acertar.
And finally, the gift is always a memory. We remember experiences, birthday parties and weddings where unique things happened. The gift works the same way, the more unique it is and the more it speaks of the relationship you have between you, the more important this object will be throughout the life of the person given.
Y por último, el regalo es siempre un recuerdo. Recordamos las experiencias, las fiestas de cumpleaños y las bodas donde pasaron cosas únicas. El regalo funciona igual, cuanto más único sea y cuanto más hable de la relación que tenéis entre vosotros más importante será este objeto al largo de la vida de la persona regalada.
Also! Don't forget to recycle and buy wisely. The world, and you yourself, will notice. Last year, my cousin gave her son a second-hand toy workshop for Christmas, which she gave to Santa to deliver wrapped to him on Christmas Eve. My cousin thought he already had plenty of gifts from everyone and it didn't make any sense to keep buying. The child was immensely happy.

Mi prima el año pasado le regalo por Navidad a su hijo un taller de juguete de segunda mano, se lo dió a Santa para que se lo entregara la Noche de Navidad empaquetado. Mi prima pensó que ya tenía muchos regalos por parte de todo el mundo y no tenía ningún sentido seguir comprando. El niño estaba inmensamente feliz.
